Kazuko (Hayashi) Sloan

February 7, 1928 — May 9, 2020

Kazuko (Hayashi) Sloan was born on February 7, 1928 in Takehara, Japan.

She is preceded in death by her parents (Ryuon and Umeyo Hayashi), husband (Zane Sloan), five brothers, and three sisters.

She is survived by two stepsons, Raymond Sloan and wife Kathy of Lebanon, Missouri and Robert Sloan of Florida; stepdaughter, Linda Ryan of Austin, Texas; two nephews, George Goto and Joanne Boland of Burlington, Canada and Takakiyo Goto of Yamanashi, Japan; niece, Yoko Watanabe of Osaka, Japan; great niece Chikako Ng and husband Boon of Los Angeles, California; good friends, Lisa and Johnny Shipp and family; many relatives and friends.

Kazuko worked in Japan as a dress maker until she met Sergeant Zane L. Sloan and married him on February 5, 1965. Kazuko became a U.S. Citizen on May 10, 1971. Zane and Kay traveled in the U.S. for a while then settling in Salem, Arkansas. Zane sold bait from his bait shop and Kay sold items from her gift shop at Salem.

After Zane passed, Kay moved to Shalimar, Florida where she enjoyed retirement living at the Bob Hope Air Force Enlisted Village. One of her proudest accomplishments was being able to get her husband’s past due, well deserved, Purple Heart Medal, which was presented to her on March 28, 2005. Kay also wrote a book about her younger sister Nobuko, who she was very close to. Kay experienced the Hiroshima bombings of WWII. The last two years of her life she decided to move back to the Ozarks where she lived with her good friends, Lisa and Johnny Shipp and daughter Hannah in Thayer, Missouri. Kay being young at heart and always ready to go, loved swimming and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She will truly be missed.  

Graveside memorial service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Fowler Cemetery in Caulfield, Missouri with Bro. Ed Carter officiating. Memorials may be made to the Fowler Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Salem, Arkansas.
