Donald Ray Young, beloved brother, husband, father and Papa, passed away in Lewisville, Texas, November 4, 2022.
Don was born August 5, 1939, in a two-bedroom home on a farm in the tiny town of Elizabeth, Arkansas. The thirteenth of the fourteen children born to Alvin and Laura (Cantrell) Young, had seven brothers and six sisters: Elmo Young, Cecil Young (Norma Jean), G.W. Young (Bea), Billy Young (Audrey), Odell Young, Gaylon Young, Bobby Young (Betty), Thelma Mahan (Chauncey), Eunice Martin (Lloyd), Beatrice Cole (John), Irene Mesiano (John), Betty Arcille Coscia (Al), Winifred “Sally” Krug (Carl).
After attending school in Elizabeth and Viola, Arkansas, Don left at the age of 14, to move to Kansas City, Missouri, where he started supporting himself. Five years later, on November 1, 1958, Don married Sue James in Elizabeth, though the couple returned to Kansas City to start their family.
In Kansas City, he worked for Peerless Products for 23 years while learning the window industry and developing a great reputation within it. With a big nudge from Sue, he opened the Don Young Company in Dallas in 1978, and quickly branched out. As of today, the DYC has five locations busy fulfilling window and storm door orders while maintaining the same honesty and dependable products that Don insisted upon when he began the company. Don was highly respected by the many who chose to stay by his side for 20 plus years.
When Don wasn’t working, he loved being on his farm in Elizabeth. Every day for the 13 years he and Sue lived in Arkansas, he drove to the farm from Mountain Home. During the time he lived in Texas, he went back to Arkansas – and to his farm – as much as he could. He loved tinkering with the farm equipment, looking at his land or visiting with others at the local café or gas station.
Don and Sue moved to Flower Mound in 2007, much to Sue’s delight. When he wasn’t at work, you could find him in his chair watching Fox News or any western that happened to be on. He started attending West Main Church of Christ on Sundays with Sue, and there he met his Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 19, 2017.
Don was a kind man who loved his family. Though he may not have always known how to show that love, it was ever-present and never-ending. He was a man of integrity, honesty and stubbornness – a trait he passed on to all his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter Teresia Young Hodges; son Scotty Young (Gail); his granddaughter Shea Young Jones; grandson Dillon Young; great-grandson Blaize Jones; step-grandchildren Andy Bailey (Candice) and Cody Hodges; step-great grandchildren Nolan Bailey, Keegan Bailey, Drew Bailey, Lynnlee Hodges; sisters-in-law Audrey Young and Bea Young; brother-in-law Carl Krug, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, all thirteen of his siblings and son-in-law, Richard “Dickie” Hodges.
There will be a visitation at noon followed by a service to celebrate Don’s life at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home is Lewisville, Texas.
