Irene Lorene (Brown) Short, 99, of Salem, Arkansas was born on February 24, 1917, in Viola, Arkansas, daughter of John Madison and Mary Lee (Pate) Brown. She departed this life on December 21, 2016 at Southfork River Therapy and Living Center in Salem, Arkansas. Irene was married to Charley Coleman Short on June 16, 1940 in Melbourne, Arkansas. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church where she played the piano and organ and served as the secretary and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Sorosis club, co- owner of Short’s Store, and loved to play golf. She is survived by her son Jim Short and wife Becky of Salem, Arkansas; three daughters, Sue Kerst and husband LeRoy of Springdale, Arkansas, Nancy Root and husband Bob of Greene, New York, and Patty Neal of Sturkie, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, Amy Root, Robert and Sara Root, Marc and Meghan Leduc, Heather Kerst and husband Stephen Hives, Jessica Short, Matthew and Kristin Short, Joe and Megan Neal, Emma Neal, and Jenny Neal: ten great grandchildren, Nathaniel Leduc, Hudson Leduc, Robbie Root, Sterling Root, Olivia Root, Marshall Root, Beckett Short, Vivian Short, Rayden Irene Neal, and Lakynn James Neal and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley Coleman Short; her parents, John and Mary Brown; two sisters, Evelyn Foster and Iris Logan; three brothers, Noble Brown, Roscoe Brown, and Curtis Brown and grandson Christopher Kerst. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Salem United Methodist Church in Salem, Arkansas with Pastor Velda Bell officiating. Visition will be Saturday, December 24, 2016 9:00 A.M. until time of service at the church. Interment will be at the Salem Cemetery in Salem, Arkansas. Pallbearers are Joe Neal, Matthew Short, John Ed Welch, David Harris, Mike Webber, and Denny Reese. Memorials may be made to Salem UMC – Feed our Children.
